The nearest star to our sun Proxima Centauri has a planet where liquid water might flow. If that is true, it may well be the best chance of extraterrestrial life.
An international group of astronomers announced the discovery Wednesday.
The planet is slightly larger than Earth and has about the same composition.
The temperature allows liquid water to be possible. The planet is in the so-called habitable zone.
“The planet will be an important goal in the hunt for evidence of life elsewhere in the universe”
The planet has been named Proxima b. The planet spins around Proxima Centauri. That star is just four light years from Earth, but is not visible to the naked eye.
Scientists have some time to calculate whether a mission is possible. Which should begin in a year or twenty. With new technologies they could sent a probe rapidly and would only need thirty years to reach the star.
